Released on August 21, 1987, no one, not even the main stars stars Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, could of predicted the craze this epic movie turned into. We’re still talking about the dance-musical-romance’s sensual choreography, its oldies soundtrack, and not putting Baby in a corner. Here are some not-so-dirty facts about the iconic movie, which grossed nearly $215 million worldwide.

A Dirty Dancing Reality Show Aired Over Seas.

For two seasons between 2007 and 2008, the U.K.’s Living network aired a reality show called “Dirty Dancing, The Time Of Your Life” in which groups of dancers competed for a year-long contract with Bloc, a Los Angeles-based dance agency. The series took place at Virginia’s Mountain Lake Lodge, where much of the original movie was filmed.

Mountain Lake Lodge Regularly Hosts Dirty Dancing Weekends.

The Pembroke, Virginia resort where many of the Kellerman’s scenes were filmed hosts three Dirty dancing themed weekends a year. Dinners, a sock hop, a screening of the movie, a watermelon toss, group dance lessons, and a Dirty dancing scavenger hunt are some of the fun items listed on the agenda.

Val Kilmer Was Offered The role Of Johnny But Turned It Down.

Not sure if Val could of pulled off the energetic scenes as well as Patrick did them.

Jennifer Grey Was Older Than The Character.

She had five minutes to convince them she could play the role of a 17 year old…ten years younger than she actually was.

There Are No Close Ups Of The Lake Scene.

The movie was filmed in October and their lips turned blue!

Patrick Swayze Had To Convince Jennifer Grey To Play The Part.

Jennifer was not thrilled and down right hated  Patrick in while he was in Red Dawn.

Dr. Ruth Was Originally Going To Play Mrs. Schumacher.

She dropped out of the role as soon as she found out the character was a thief!

The movie was re-released in 1997.

Penny Briefly Transformed Into A Pop Star.

Cynthia Rhodes made a name for herself as dancer Tina Tech in 1983’s Flashdance and gained notoriety when she co-starred with John Travolta in Saturday Night the same year. But it was her role as Johnny Castle’s dancing partner, Penny, that garnered her the most notice. A couple years after Dirty Dancing she married singer Richard Marx (they’ve since divorced).

The song “She’s Like the Wind” was sung by Patrick Swayze and co-written by Swayze and Stacy Widelitz.
